In today's comic book world, it's common to see the protagonist fail or experience life-altering circumstances. Countless examples show what happens when heroes make mistakes that cost many people their lives, even to the point where writers have created entire storylines around the topic.

However, this isn't how things used to be. Heroes were toted as nigh indestructible or those with an unbreakable will. How could the story go on if "Superman" were to be defeated?

Superheroes were inspirational figures created in desperate times, but they weren't relatable to the readers.

They were impervious to the daily trials many go through, as they were always predicted to come out on top-lacking the stakes needed to tell a more compelling story. However, what if they were to make a crucial mistake that the effects last a lifetime?
